What is their job?
- We are currently in the test phase of exploring the autonomous driving technology of our MOIAs (VW ID. Buzz AD)
- During our autonomous test phase, there will always be one or two safety drivers on board
- They monitor the self-driving system and step in if support is needed
- To help us continuously train and improve the system, they document their observations as voice notes
- Don't be surprised if you hear an alert tone from time to time. That's just a safety driver logging feedback
How are they trained?
- Being a safety driver comes with special requirements
- Before getting on the road, candidates go through interviews and assessment centers
- Candidates who successfully complete the selection process move on to training
- Through classroom sessions and hands-on practice (including driving simulations, safety training and a special driving test) they learn everything they need to operate autonomous MOIAs safely
- After training, regular reviews and refresher courses help keep safety standards high on board
Please don’t distract the safety drivers during your ride
- Please talk to the safety drivers as little as possible
- If you can, also avoid loud conversations or unnecessary noise
- This helps them stay fully focused on their task
How to get help during your ride
- Got an urgent question? Use the support button to reach our fleet control center
- In an emergency, press the SOS/Stop button. The vehicle will immediately connect with the fleet control center via audio and video, and your safety driver will help you too
- Don’t be surprised if the fleet control center contacts you or the safety drivers during your ride. You’ll hear a voice through the vehicle speakers
